Our idea here was to create an open-air enclosure for the drives, mount the motherboards and power supplies on the wall nearby and use some metal bars to provide the eletrical ground, +5v and +12v for the drives.

My cohort, Alex came up with a design drawing:

This shows the tower of drives and the motherboards and power supplies mounted on the wall. I am the one standing in the doorway.

Cooling

Originally I planning on mounting fans in front of the drives to push air through the gaps between the drives. However, with the support bars acting as heat sinks and the airflow of the open system, it is fine without that. My plan was to power the 12v fans off the same power rails as the drives. In fact, I have 2 92mm case fans in the corner of the room running off the power rails to eject heat from the room. They sit in a questionable little gap above the door. I love old houses.
